those numbers are raising the stakes for the romney campaign ahead of wednesday's debate in denver. and right now expectations seem to be with the president. 55% of likely voters expect him to win the debate, according to polling from a the washington post and abc news. >> a poll that means absolutely nothing. >> it's good for romney. >> because he's got lower expectations. >> underdog. >> i guess so. >> and people could be surprised simply by seeing them side by side. i mean, the symbolism, the symbiotics i don't think can be overstated. seeing them side by side, if romney does well, i think he'll get a bump no matter what the sort of intricacies are. just side by side with the president in terms of stature and in terms of people thinking he can win, on equal footing. >> willie, he does well during the debates. we saw this during the republican primary. he faced a challenge from newt gingrich, he won. he faced a challenge from rick perry. people would say hey, this is a do-or-die debate. mitt romney must prove he can deliver the knockout blow, and he did do it in the debates time a

just yesterday romney told the denver post, scene of the new debate tomorrow night, that he wouldn't revoke the visas, the new ones, that the two-year visas, president obama has granted to some young illegal immigrants. in june he said the people who have received the special visa that the president has put in place should expect that the visa would continue to be valid. i'm not going to take something that they've purchased. before those visas expired, we will have the full immigration reform plan i have proposed. compare that to what we heard in the primary campaign about young people here illegally. let's watch that. >> when i was governor i took the action of 'em powering our state police to enforce immigration laws. when you were governor, you said i don't want to build a fence. you put in place a magnet to draw illegals into the state which was giving $10,000 in of tuition credit to illegals that come into this country. >> even the lingo he's using, the derogatories, illegals, as if they're not people first. we m is the president for the center for american progress near rattan

romney's team has concluded that the debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers he's memorized and has been practicing on aides since august. bob shrum, you have been on that particular role, preparing candidates for debate. what do you make of romney, a rather stiff customer to begin with, coming off as sort of a henny youngman or whatever, some sort of a don rickles with some zingers. i don't think of him as a zinger kind of guy where obama is expected to be left helpless. what do you make of that strategy? >> first of all, if you had it, you wouldn't announce it. it's kind of stupid. >> why are they leaking it? >> i don't know. because they're trying to hold onto their people, they're undisciplined, i have no idea. number two, zingers don't exist in a vacuum. it's not just coming up with some funny lines. they have to be part of the fabric of the argument and part of the fabric of who the person is. when ronald reagan said, there you go again, it was completely natural to him. as you know, chris, carter was right, he had opposed medicare at the star

and i'm looking forward to having that debate. >> governor romney, two minutes. >> thank you, jim. it's an honor to be here with you, and i appreciate the chance to be with the president. i'm pleased to be at the university of denver. appreciate their welcome. and also the presidential commission on these debates. and congratulations to you, mr. president, on your anniversary. i'm sure this was the most romantic place you could imagine, here with me. congratulations. this is obviously a very tender topic. i've had the occasion over the last couple of years of meeting people across the country. i was in dayton, ohio, and a woman grabbed my arm, and she said, i've been out of work since may. can you help me? and yesterday i was at a rally in denver and a woman came up to her with a baby in her arms and said, ann, my husband has had four jobs in three years, part-time jobs. he has lost his most recent job. and we've now just lost our home. can you help us? and the answer is, yes, we can help. but it's going to take a different path. not the one we've been on. not the one the president
